A Royal Visit

The Thorney Annals 963-1412 AD were edited, translated and published by Dr Cyril Hart in 1997. It is one of the sources used to look at our Medieval History - and I am amazed to see that it now costs £270 from Amazon, which is a lot of money for such a small book!


As an example of an annal - an entry to remind readers about what happened in a particular year - here is 1314. Migrants who have come to Thorney from Scotland will immediately know that this is the year of the Battle of Bannockburn, a pivotal battle of the Scottish wars of independence at which the English king was heavily defeated by King Robert the Bruce. This English source is remarkably vague about what actually happened in the war....
