We have a new acquisition for the Museum in Thorney.
This mess tin, a two part aluminium food container, was bought at auction, labelled that it came from Knarrs (sic) Cross Farm, Thorney.
Italian and German soldiers came to the Prisoner of War Camp in Thorney, then From 1947 it became a camp for European Voluntary Workers, men displaced during World War II. It closed in 1950.
It reads SALERNO 5º=G BACI AMORI MARIA
[Salerno is in Southern Italy, near Naples
Baci Amori Maria “Kisses, my dear Maria”]
As usual, we are grateful for any memories from Thorney people about their links with out local history. Do you remember the Camp? Please email enquiry@thorney-museum.org.uk or come to the Museum, 2-5pm on Sundays until September.
